Quick Guide

How to Play Pictionary

New to Pictionary? Here's all you need to know to get started in minutes.

Split Into Teams

Divide your group into two or more teams of 2–4 players each. Choose which team goes first.

Generate a Word

The drawer clicks "Generate Word" to get a random Pictionary word. Only the drawer sees the word.

Draw & Guess

Start the 60-second timer. The drawer sketches the word — no letters, numbers, or talking allowed!

Score & Repeat

Correct guesses earn a point on the scoreboard. Teams take turns until someone reaches the winning score.

Our Word Library, Measured

Every count below is recomputed from our own files, with the audits that shaped them.

Every figure on this page was recomputed by script on October 4, 2026 from the same /words/*.json files the generator reads, and every audit below is measured against our own dated backup of the library it changed. Nothing here is a rounded marketing number.

Entries per library

Pictionary word entries per library, measured October 4, 2026Horizontal bar chart of the 24 word libraries on this site, sorted largest to smallest. The three general difficulty libraries hold 1,012, 1,013 and 1,020 entries; themed libraries run about 200 to 300.Hard (general)1,020Medium (general)1,013Easy (general)1,012Adults300Sports287Kids260Movies253Movie charades250Funny246Charades for kids244Easter244Easy charades244Mother's Day244Teens239New Year's Eve223Bible220Charades220Birthday214Valentine207Halloween206Bridal shower205Thanksgiving204Office203Christmas200
Counted October 4, 2026 by reading every string in /words/*.json. Three general libraries carry about a thousand entries each; themed libraries run 200–300.

Why there are two totals

7,958 entries sit in 24 libraries, but only 6,964 are distinct prompts. The difference is 994 rows (731 prompts) filed in a second library on purpose: a word such as Cat belongs in Animals and in the kids list, so it is counted once per library and once overall. When this site advertises 7,000+ words it means the 7,958 entries the generator can draw from, rounded down; counted as unique prompts the same library holds 6,964, which is the stricter figure we use here.

Audits on record

2026-09-20Brand-name sweep, one-for-one: 29 entries replaced across 9 libraries (kids (8), funny (7), office (3), bridal shower (1), easter (1), sports (1), charades for kids (1), easy (1), adults (6)).2929
2026-09-27Adults library converged onto safe humor: party-shock prompts, finance acronyms and therapy vocabulary removed, everyday adult awkwardness written in their place.6466
2026-09-30Published word counts re-verified against each library file. One overstated figure (charades “240+”) corrected to the exact 220. No words changed.00

The method behind these passes — what a word has to fail to be removed — is published on the editorial change log. Spotted a prompt that does not belong in a list? Tell us: we re-audit that library and publish what moved.

For scale, the longest prompt we publish is “Trying to Leave a Conversation Gracefully While Both Feet Point at the Exit” at 75 characters — the kind of idiom the Hard tier exists for. The shortest are single shapes such as Cat, Sun and Tree, which is why 45.2% of the library is one word.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Pictionary word generator is a free online tool that instantly picks random Pictionary words and phrases for your drawing game. Instead of physical card decks that can run out or be repeated, our generator gives you an endless supply of fresh prompts organized by difficulty and category. It works on any device — mobile, tablet, or desktop.
You don't need the official Pictionary board game at all! All you need is something to draw on (paper, whiteboard, or a virtual whiteboard app), something to draw with, and our free word generator. Use our built-in timer and scoreboard to run the full game experience completely free.
The basic rules: one player (the "artist") draws a word while teammates try to guess it within 60 seconds. The artist cannot speak, use letters, numbers, gestures, or sound effects — only drawing is allowed. If the team guesses correctly before time runs out, they score a point. Teams alternate turns. The first team to reach the agreed winning score wins the game.
Pictionary works best with 4–12 players divided into teams of 2–4. The ideal setup is two teams of two. With larger groups, you can create more teams or have more guessers per team — the more the merrier! There's no strict maximum number of players.
Yes! Our Pictionary word generator works for Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, or Discord. See the full host checklist on our virtual Pictionary guide, share a whiteboard for drawing, and keep the prompt private on a second screen.
Our generator covers 10 main categories: Animals, Food & Drink, Objects, Actions, Places, Nature, Sports, Movies, People & Professions, and Abstract Concepts. Read the Pictionary categories guide for card colors, or browse samples on the list of Pictionary words.
