Running a Slip-Based Game: The Physical Deck Method

Paper slips beat a phone in three situations: classrooms with device rules, outdoor parties with bad light, and any group that likes the ritual of drawing from a bowl. The system that works: print one difficulty per page, cut the slips, and keep each difficulty in a separate container. Two bowls let you change difficulty mid-game without reshuffling, and three bowls turn the game into a player choice, draw from the green bowl for an easy word, red for hard, and award double points for the risky draw.

Fold every slip twice so nobody can read through the paper, and recycle guessed slips face-down at the bottom of the bowl if your group wants a second pass. For parties, add five blank slips to each bowl; whoever draws a blank invents their own word and earns a bonus point if it gets guessed. For classrooms, the blank slips become a vocabulary exercise: students write their own unit words and contribute them to the class deck. One printed page yields enough slips for a forty-minute session.

What to Print for Your Event

  • Family game night: one Easy page plus one Medium page. Start from the easy bowl and move up when the kids start winning too easily.
  • Classroom or ESL session: two Easy pages, cut and shuffled. Pair with the timing plan in our classroom guide, and let students add unit vocabulary on blank slips.
  • Office or adult party: Medium page plus Hard page for a challenge round. Print double-sided to halve the cutting time.
  • Holiday events: print these base lists, then add themed words by copying them from the seasonal pages, for example the Christmas list, onto your own slips.

Store used decks in an envelope labeled with the event and the date. After a few events you will know exactly which words your crowd burns through and which ones stall, and you can rebuild the deck accordingly.
